TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT – GRAND REHEARSAL FOR THE FUNERAL OF THE RT. EXCELLENT SIR GARFIELD ST. AUBRUN SOBERS
The grand rehearsal for the State Funeral of the late Rt. Excellent Sir Garfield St. Aubrun Sobers, NH, AO, OCC, will be held on Sunday 25th July, 2026. As a result, there will be a number of traffic changes in effect.
ROAD CLOSURES
On the relevant date from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm or until otherwise directed by a member of The Barbados Police Service (TBPS), the following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic:
- a) Bridge Street
- b) Lower Bay Street/Lower Fairchild Street
- c) Lower River Road
- d) Broad Street
- e) Prince Alfred Street
- f) Cheapside
- g) Fontabelle
- h) President Kennedy Drive
- i) Mighty Grynner Highway to Holborn Circle
On the relevant date from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm or until otherwise directed by a member of TBPS, the following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic:
- a) Skeenes Hill at its junction with Yorkshire Road to the Ridge Roundabout
- b) Old Newton Road from the exit of the Cemetery to the Ridge Roundabout
- c) The Ridge Roundabout at its junction with Ridge Road
- d) Searles Road at its junction with Searles Quarry to the Ridge Roundabout
- e) The Clay Target Shooting Association entrance to the Ridge Roundabout
TRAFFIC RESTRICTTIONS
On the relevant date from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm or until otherwise directed by a member of TBPS, motorists travelling along the following roads will be restricted. Delays are expected:
- a) Michaels Row
- b) Marhill Street
- c) Trafalgar Street
- d) Cowell Street
- e) President Kennedy Drive from its junction with Westbury to Holborn Circle
TRAFFIC DIVERSIONS
On the relevant date from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm or until otherwise directed by a member of TBPS the following diversions will be in effect:
- a) Motorists travelling along Upper Bay Street from the direction of Hastings, must turn right at Jemmotts Lane and travel towards Martindales Road. PSV’s will be allowed to travel along Upper River Road and make a right turn onto John Beckles Drive.
- b) Motorists travelling from Collymore Rock with the intention of travelling to the lower city must turn right at Martindales Road or right at River Road with its junction at John Beckles Road and travel towards Constitution Road.
- c) Motorists travelling along Roebuck Street from the direction of James A Tudor Roundabout with the intention of travelling to the lower city MUST divert at Pinfold Street.
- d) Motorist travelling along St. Michael’s row or Hardwood Alley will divert along Spry Street and travel towards Roebuck Street.
- e) Motorists travelling along Constitution Road will divert at Church Village Road or Spry Street and continue towards Roebuck Street.
- f) Motorists travelling along Baxters road will divert at Reed street or Sobers Lane and continue to the upper City, no access will be allowed onto Broad Street.
- g) Public Service vehicles travelling along Baxters road will be granted controlled access to Broad Street.
- h) Motorists travelling along Upper President Kennedy Drive from the direction of Eagle Hall must divert at Westbury Road and travel either towards Exmouth or Baxters Road. Emergency vehicles working with the funeral service will be allowed access to travel towards Kensington Oval.
NO PARKING
On the relevant date during the relevant periods, no person shall park or allow a vehicle to remain stationary on any of the following roads:
- a) Fairchild Street
- b) Michaels Row
- c) Marhill Street
- d) Ricketts Street
- e) Palmetto Street
- f) High Street
- g) Trafalgar Street
- h) Upper Broad Street
- i) Lower Broad Street
- j) Cowell Street
- k) Cheapside
- l) Fontabelle
OFFENCES
Any person who contravenes these rules or fails to comply with any order given by a member of The Barbados Police Service in uniform, is guilty of an offence and is liable on summary conviction, to a fine of five hundred dollars ($500BDS) or to imprisonment for a term of three (3) months.
These rules do not apply to vehicles used by The Barbados Police Service, the Barbados Defence Force, and the Barbados Fire Service, or any emergency vehicle.
Police Officers will also be deployed on the day, to assist with all traffic management.
