To Serve, Protect and Reassure

What Is a Neighbourhood Watch?

A Neighbourhood Watch is a method of developing close liaison between households in a community, the police and authority.

The Neighbourhood Watch scheme is based on the concept of good neighbours. It is a self-help Crime Prevention Programme aimed at reducing threats to you and your neighbour’s property. Deciding to organize or join a watch means you have made a positive commitment to act against crime in your community.

Neighbours are encouraged to join together to keep watch over each other’s property and to report suspicious people and occurrences to the police

It involves:

1: Neighbours getting together to know each other and working together in a programme of mutual assistance;

2: Residents are trained to recognize and report suspicious activities; and

3:  Implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security, Marking of Property, etc.

Each scheme is a community initiative, which is supported by the police but not run by them. Success depends on what the members make of the scheme, but Neighbourhood Watch gives people the chance to get to know and help each other better, particularly the more vulnerable.

What Are The Objectives?

  1. To reduce crime, other acts of lawlessness affecting householders in their community.
  2. To develop a community spirit among people living in the Neighbourhood Watch area.
  3. To enhance the relationship between the police and the public by encouraging greater contacts between all concern.
  4. To encourage residents to help themselves by helping the police in the prevention and detection of crime.

Members are expected to be alert and respond to what is going on in their neighbourhood, but the scheme does not promote or encourage vigilantism.

How To Start a Programme

Schemes usually start because of residents or police in an area identify a crime problem and want to reduce it.

The Community Policing Department, The Crime Prevention office or the Community Police Officers of the Royal Barbados Police Force will assist you in the establishment of a Watch programme in an effort to make your community safer. Your desire to establish a watch should be communicated to any of these departments/persons.

Once it has been decided to introduce Neighbourhood Watch into a particular area, and there is real support or the scheme, arrangements will be made for police to meet and discuss the scheme with residents.

It costs you nothing, but you and your family will reap the benefits of a safer and happier community.

The success of the programme rests on your participation, and it is necessary that you and your neighbours support the scheme

Neighbourhood Watch schemes belong to the community. The Police officers are pleased to offer advice and support during the establishment.

Questions to be asked:

  1. Do we want a neighbourhood watch and if so what do we expect to benefit from it?
  2. What do we do as a group to achieve something?
  3. What is needed to make this happen?

4. Will your plan help solve the problems identified?
