Among the many innovations in the Barbados Police Force by Colonel R.T. Michelin, Commisssioner of Police, was the introduction of dogs into service. Two untrained Alsatians “Rip” and “Peggy” were presented to the Force by Scotland Yard in February 1951. The dogs became very useful members of the Force and were used in the investigation of crime along with regular patrols.

The Canine section plays an important role in the prevention and detection of crime as well as the sniffing out of illegal drugs at the ports of entry in the country. They also participates in Police Tattoos and other displays.
